Reviewed concepts of BB board day last Friday.
Discussion of progress of man and why it took so long to make fire.
Purpose of today's class is to see if we can determine structure of materials from a study of their physical properties.
Did paper lab.
Many students did not finish.

Materials unit: BB Board Day
Bending wire introduces a defect that makes the metal stronger.
Conan video of making sword. Talked about the physics of sword making.
How crystals form out of molten rock...the don't all form at the same temperature.
Cooling slowly allows for the formation of larger crystals.
Demo of defects and cooling using BB boards.
Used microscopes to watch crystal formation and what happens when grains run into each other.
Assigned optional Quia quiz on BB board day.

Handed back and went over test.
Had several substances - asked students to classify them. At first most students classified them as solid, liquid, both.
Students then classified them as man-made or natural
I suggested pure vs mixtures.
Students then classified pure as elements or compounds.
Students classified mixtures as smooth (homogeneous) or lumpy (heterogeneous)
In the sludge lab, students will have to separate substances based on physical properties and then identify them.

Handed out study packet for test and went over a lot of it before students got bored.
Asked students to finish packet, especially the vocab section.

Question and answer on Periodic Table. Went around room.
Went from questions on yesterday's worksheets to ionic and covalent bonding.
Finished with brief summary of what will be on the test next Tuesday.

Tried doing lesson on important features of periodic table but just could not keep students' attention. Ended up giving them three worksheets (navigating the periodic table, electrons in orbitals, and valence electrons and Lewis diagrams.
Students worked on these and handed them in at the end of class.
